Education is a right, not a privilege, and for students with disabilities, accessing this right often requires additional support. Recognizing the challenges faced by these learners, Student Support Services (SSS), recently hosted a groundbreaking workshop aimed at transforming the educational landscape for students with disabilities. This initiative served as a vital step toward creating a more inclusive, empowering environment for all students in the college.
The workshop was designed to equip scribes and readers with the skills to assist students during assessments, ensuring fair opportunities and reducing the stress these learners often face. It’s about more than exams—it’s about independence, dignity, and opening doors to success. As SSS emphasized, the ultimate goal is to break down barriers and provide students with the resources they need to thrive.
During the workshop, the participants went through a special exercise where they got to experience the a few minutes of how a blind student manages daily life. One participant Simamkele Sundu shared, “With the help of a scribe, I feel like the mountain of stress that comes with an exam will be greatly reduced and my short glimpse into the life of a differently abled student has taught me that disability does not defines one’s abilities. This programme will surely help differently abled students to reclaim their future”.
Disability is not a limitation—it’s a different way of experiencing the world. Through initiatives like these, the message is clear: with the right support, students with disabilities can achieve their full potential. This workshop was not just an event; it was a movement toward equity, dignity, and empowerment. It reaffirmed that education must leave no one behind, ensuring every student has the tools to write their own story of success.
The journey toward inclusivity continues, one step at a time, with the hope that each action inspires a more equitable future.
